Virtual Beekeeping Experience

Fascinated by bees? Are you a would-be beekeeper, or someone who would love to know more?

During this 60 or 90 minute Virtual Beekeeping Experience, you will get to spend time with Dom, who has been keeping bees for many years. Dom is a passionate beekeeper and ex secondary school teacher and has a wonderful way of communicating his enthusiasm for bees in an interesting and understandable way.

The session will start with a general chat about bees and beekeeping, then you will go through the hives together, with Dom wearing a body-camera and earpiece. Dom will point out to you what is going on inside the hive and answer any questions you have in real-time. You will see fresh honeycomb filled with honey, thousands and thousands of bees up-close and personal, some brood, and hopefully, a Queen Bee, if she's behaving (they can be a bit shy).

After your session has ended, we will send you a jar of honey produced by your bees as soon as it has been spun (which may take a few weeks, depending on the time of year).

You will also receive a Certificate of Adoption for the Queen Bee of your hive, a factsheet about bees and you will help us save the bees!

Who would this make a good present for?

  • Anyone interested in bees or wildlife
  • Anyone interested in ecology or the environment
  • Anyone looking for fun, safe things to do during COVID-19
  • Beginner beekeepers
  • People who are allergic to bee stings
  • People who are fascinated by bees but would freak out if they had to stand inside a swarm of hundreds of thousands of flying bees
  • People who don't have an apiary nearby
  • Up to 2 people can attend the session at any one time. It would make a really fun and unusual date!
  • Sessions for children can be organised in advance. We simply ask that an adult is present at all times. Also, for your peace of mind, Dom is DBS checked. As a Dad of 3, as well as a teacher, Dom is experienced with children and knows how to make it fun.

The Practicalities

Bees are inactive in winter and it would do them harm to go through the hives before Spring. Sessions can be booked at any time, but will only run from 1st April 2021. You can book a session at any time to suit yourself, including evenings and weekends. We will happily book sessions in advance.

The session can be conducted via Zoom, Skype or any other similar software. If you have a preference, please say so when booking (we may need to adjust bookings around weather and light conditions to ensure you have the very best experience - bees do not like the cold and wet).

What you will receive when you book

If you wish to buy a Virtual Beekeeping Session for a gift, you will receive a digital Certificate of Adoption for your Queen Bee (that you can print out, if you prefer), a commemorative mug, and instructions on how to book your session.

After you have enjoyed your Virtual Beekeeper Session, you will receive a one-pound jar of raw honey (worth £6) produced from your hive. This may be several weeks after your beekeeping experience as honey is harvested in batches.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, either via the chat function, or by emailing dom@mrsbeesemporium.co.uk
